A soldier running from his past…
Army Ranger, Max Hamilton, has returned to Destiny Falls after the sudden death of his brother. Only coming home means more than trying to save the family farm. Coming home means facing the demons he left behind, and allowing himself to love again when becoming a father wasn’t part of the plan.
A young woman denying herself a future…
Suburban veterinarian, Chelsea Stevens, understands that raising her niece is the only chance for a child she will ever have. Fulfilling her sister’s final wish is more than just moving her career…it’s providing a sense of family and risking her heart with a man intent on walking away.

Chelsea had to admit she was nervous, as moments later she sat behind the wheel of her fuel efficient hybrid still in her sister’s driveway. This wasn’t a weekend getaway up north. She’d jumped in without seriously thinking things through, which was so unlike her, but she blamed it on the stress of grief and wanting to fulfill Val’s wishes. Common sense told her she should have at least called the Hamilton’s to let them know she was coming and why. Doubts about the move started to creep in.
What if they didn’t care? What if they didn’t like the fact that Val and Nate hadn’t gotten married right away? During the good days, between chemo treatments, she and Val had extensive talks about the future, specifically Bella’s future. Val and Nate had planned to get married once the cancer was under control. Their dream disintegrated after Nate’s horrible accident at the farm. Val had been so weak and sick from her treatment she couldn’t attend the funeral, and Chelsea hadn’t wanted to leave her alone.
Bella fussed and wiggled from being stuck in the confines of her car seat without movement, drawing Chelsea from her memory. She quickly started the car and shushed her niece before turning on the radio which seemed to soothe them both. Her condo had already been sublet when she’d decided to move in with Val full time. There was nothing left in the townhouse and the movers had long since gone. The only thing to do now was continue with the plan or stay in a hotel and call the whole thing off. In her heart Chelsea knew she couldn’t do that.
Bella had Hamilton listed as her last name on the birth certificate. Chelsea had never met Nate. From conversations with Val, she knew her sister and Nate had found something special with each other. They were completely in love and wanted what was best for their daughter, which was why Chelsea needed to find Max Hamilton right away … whether he was happy about it or not.

She’d gone into protective mode, trying to deny what was and had been happening between them, throwing his words and behavior out in the open with the hope it would change things. He’d recognized the signs because he’d been there himself. She’d shocked the hell out of him by declaring her love before leaving. He wondered if she’d meant to say it or if it had just slipped out.
He wouldn’t deny what he felt any longer but in that exact moment, the words stayed hidden in his heart. Hopefully he only needed time to adjust and convince his heart that Chelsea was safe with him. He also had to convince Chelsea. Once she knew he wasn’t going anywhere, she’d open her heart to trust him. Then his pain would be over for good and nothing would take her from him. It was time he moved on, and he was ready to, with her.
