Tess Brookes has always been a Girl with a Plan. But when the Plan goes belly up, she’s forced to reconsider. After accidently answering her roommate Vanessa’s phone, she decides that since being Tess isn’t going so well, she might try being Vanessa. With nothing left to lose, she accepts Vanessa’s photography assignment to Hawaii – she used to be an amateur snapper, how hard can it be? Right? But Tess is soon in big trouble. And the gorgeous journalist on the shoot with her, who is making it very clear he’d like to get into her pants, is an egotistical monster. Far from home and in someone else’s shoes, Tess must decide whether to fight on through, or ‘fess up and run…

Favorite Quotes:

“The biggest problem with crazy, tear-your-clothes-off sex was that once you’d torn off your clothes and had the crazy sex, the clothes were hard to locate in a dignified fashion.  It was impossible not to feel a bit slutty scrabbling around on the floor looking for your pants.  It was all well and good if you were one of those girls who slinks around starkers after sexytimes, but I wasn’t really a naked person.”

“Not everyone has a book in them.  Some people don’t even have a Post-it note.”

“He is one of those men everyone wants.  He’s like pizza and George Clooney.  Everyone wants a slice.”

“He looked so big and manly as he unraveled he rope that tied the boat to the pier I was worried my ovaries were going to burst.  Traitors.”

“He was like a cross between catnip and Prozac – just being near him made everything else seem totally insignificant.  I was completely calm and buzzing all at once.”

“There was too much to process, and I wasn’t going to be able to work anything out within a thirty-food radius of his penis.  It was basically a homing beacon of temporary insanity.”

My Review:

Reminiscent of Bridget Jones, About a Girl was a fun and humorous read.  I didn’t laugh aloud but I frequently smiled and smirked, and found the story entertaining and light.  Many of the British cultural references (such as politics, television shows, actors, retail outlets, product names, and obscenities) were lost on me, but I always enjoy learning more naughty words and phrases to toss around, like cockwomble, and dirty mare.  I had far too many favorite quotes marked and had to pare them down to a mere six.  I enjoyed all the quirky and varied characters, and found the story to be well written, amusing, and witty.  I loved how Tess talked to inanimate objects while processing her thoughts.  These gals like to swear, drink, and complain about men and work, hmm… sounds a lot like my social circle – but without the gray.  My only complaint is with the ending, there really wasn’t one.
