Sawyer Callahan is a former cop turned accounting instructor, part time real estate appraiser and handy man, and single dad to a teenaged girl. He keeps his once-chaotic life now firmly under his strict, somewhat OCD control. Until he decides to sell the house that reminds him too much of his late wife.

Miranda Landon is hot-shot real estate agent with a relationship-sized chip on her shoulder that she exorcises, frequently, with the help of as many men as possible.

These two meet, of course. But what happens may surprise you.

APPRAISED is the first in a series of 100% FREE Liz Crowe novels told in a unique back-and-forth point of view style. Real Estate Romance with humor and spice available to subscribers to Liz’s once-a-month newsletter.

Excerpt

“You know what I think,” Miranda said, bumping his shoulder companionably. He shook his head and finished his third, ill-considered beer. He’d not eaten since Kelly’s breakfast this morning and it was going on eight-thirty. He should go home, be a responsible dad and make sure his daughter made her grounded curfew. “I think you like me.”
He snorted and set the empty glass down, motioning for the check as he tugged his wallet out of his gym bag. “You think too much,” he said, not looking at her. He loved it when women felt confident enough not to wear makeup in public. And this woman, with the spray of un-concealed freckles across the bridge of her nose, had done just that, showering, dressing and meeting him without a stitch of artifice between them. Helen would hardly ever leave the house without the full compliment of foundations and whatever else that littered her side of the bathroom vanity, even if just out for a few groceries.
“No, no, don’t get me wrong, pal,” she insisted, waving the bartender away when he appeared and turning to face him so he had the full, breathtaking affect of her cleavage revealed at the v-neck of a thin T-shirt. “I don’t mean like I’m your type to date or whatever.”
“Whew, what a relief. I’d hate to have to be the one to break that to you.” He leaned on the bar, relaxing ever so slightly for the first time since he’d walked in here and found her sitting, drinking, and watching sports. He didn’t really like how she made him feel. But somehow, having broken the ice with the invite for a game and now this comfortable, friendly round of beers, he was easing into a place in head where he didn’t feel like he had to guard himself from her. “Since we’re well established buddies now,” he said, wondering how in the hell this might go and going for it anyway, “Tell me what made you think hiring a total stranger in a strange city to fuck you out of your divorce funk was a good idea.”
She blinked, tilted her head, frowned, and turned away from him. He didn’t move, rolling the eff-bomb around in his mouth. He rarely used it and wasn’t sure why he’d said it to her now. Even as a cop all those years hanging out with some of the most foul-mouthed, foul-tempered men going, he’d maintained his ability to not say words that flowed from them like water over a cliff. She held up a hand. The bartender appeared.
“My friend here and I are in need of something stronger,” she said, pushing their empty pint glasses away. “Do you have Jefferson Reserve?” She named a bourbon he’d tried a few times, when someone else was paying, in his typical, tightwad fashion. The guy nodded, pulled a bottle off a mirrored shelf behind him and grabbed two rocks glasses. Miranda took them, and got off her barstool. “Come on, pal,” she said, emphasizing the word a little too much for his taste. “I’ll tell you all of it. But at a table.”
He grabbed both of their gym bags and followed her, forcing himself to look at her bobbing, red ponytail and not the sway of her hips. They sat. She poured them each a small portion and lifted the glass to her nose, closing her eyes and making him break out in a cold sweat at the way she caressed the edge of the glass with her lips.
Oh for crying out loud, Callahan. This is not a soap opera. This woman wants a friend. Be one and get over yourself.

Favorite Quotes:

“I shake my head at her nonsense. Drama.  It follows her around like a bad smell.  I cringe, imagining what she has gotten herself into now.”

“He’s a cop, Lindsey.  It’s his job to sniff out liars and while you’d probably rock the orange jumpsuit, I can’t picture you happily swapping your Dior threads for it.”

“I was always bold enough to use my voice, but never brave enough to listen to my heart.”

My Review:

Exposed is a strong debut for a new author, full of suspense, secrets, and tension.  I wasn’t sure I was going to like these characters, and although she was a bit frustrating, she grew on me.  The story line was unique and held my interest, and the writing was well paced and entertaining.

Book Review: The Great Christmas Knit-Off by Alexandra Brown

The Great Christmas Knit-Off cover

The Great Christmas Knit-Off

by Alexandra Brown

Paperback: 400 pages
Publisher: William Morrow Paperbacks (October 13, 2015)

When life unravels, it's time to knit . . . Sybil has always taken comfort in her passion for knitting, creating beautiful garments stitch by stitch. But her world suddenly unravels when her fiancé ditches her for her identical twin sister at her Star Wars–themed wedding, leaving Sybil at the altar sporting a Princess Leia do. And things go from bad to worse when an incident at work jeopardizes her job. To escape her woes and forget that she'll be alone for Christmas this year, Sybil sets off to visit her friend Cher in Tindledale—a winter wonderland of quaint shops and snowy rooftops. When she arrives in the idyllic town, she can't help feeling like she's in a Hallmark greeting card. She's embraced by welcoming—if eccentric—locals wearing handmade sweaters that remind Sybil of her own creations and her unrealized ambitions of selling them. So when the owner of a vintage-clothing boutique asks her to make an assortment of knits for their display window, she's thrilled. And hoping to heal her broken heart, the hot town doctor has even taken an interest in Sybil. But just when Sybil thinks she's going to have her fairy-tale Christmas after all, an unexpected turn of events threatens to unspool her happily ever after.

Favorite Quotes:

“This is only a recent thing, noticing men.  After being in a relationship for five years with a man that I was certain I’d marry, it still feels weird looking at other guys in a snog/marry/avoid way, as Cher would say.”

“‘Honey, it’s always like that!’ she says knowingly, her voice sounding all Mae West after several hundred cigars.”

“I end up face-planting in the snow.  Thank God it’s the middle of winter and it’s already dark so nobody can see me – the stupid, ridiculous, and quite clearly desperate stranger from London who is obviously going to end up ancient and decrepit and all alone with just her knitting and a trembly old dog to keep her company.”

My Review:

I giggled and chortled through this delightful and amusing story that kept me entertained from the first page to the last.  Both the story line and writing style were clever, relevant, realistic, and engaging.  I enjoyed each and every quirky character inhabiting this quaint little country village, and found I was endlessly fascinated by their traits and conversations.  Not to say the story was without sadness, tragedy or duress - as previously stated, the story was realistic.  The heroine has been struggling for several months with the humiliation and heartbreak of betrayal, and decides to visit a friend who has recently moved away.  During her stay, she is immediately befriended by most of the village and is particularly drawn to an elderly yet proud woman with a struggling handcraft store.  What started as a fun project to help the fragile woman turns into a major undertaking to save the woman’s home and business, and much of the village also involves themselves and it is all hands on deck to fill the first order.  They “knit and natter,” the vernacular used throughout this book was such fun.  Ms. Brown is British so I praised my beloved kindle for having Wikipedia to help me with the cultural references and vocabulary.   I love learning new words and phrases like blowsy, scarpered, on the back foot, and caught herself out.  And I was smitten with the name of the store “House of Haberdashery” just genius!  I was captivated by the inner musings, dialogues, humor, and the author’s descriptive style; and have added all her works - current and planned - to my TBR.

Cover Reveal: Not The One by Amy Daws

Title: Not The One
Author: Amy Daws
Genre: Adult contemporary romance

My name is Reyna Miracle.  Even though a part of my name is Miracle, there’s nothing miraculous about me.  My body portrays the tales of my life.  Every feeling, every heartbreak, every emotion.  Marked. Inked. Stained.  A walking canvas of my messed up truth.  But there’s one confession I can’t put in a tattoo.  A confession that will kill me to tell, but my best friend died before I had the chance.   Now I’m left with him.  The only one who can hold me in the night and squeeze that spot on my neck that feels like my lifeline between sanity and chaos.   But we don’t work together.  We’re absolute poison for each other.  We’re a stifling, suffocating, sickness of darkness.   But I feel safe...because I’ve made an art of pushing people away.   Now he’s pushing back… And making me believe... Making me wonder...  Maybe, just maybe... I could be the one.   ~Not The One is connected to the London Lovers Series but will be released as a complete standalone~

He begins to stalk slowly toward me—his tall, wiry build gliding silently across the white tile floor. I back up until I hit the half wall beside the fridge. “We said we weren’t going to do this anymore, Hayden.” I hold my hand out, pressing it to his firm stomach to stop him from coming any closer. I want to walk away, but a larger part of me wants to stop thinking about Liam. And there’s only one way to do that.
Hayden sighs and grabs a piece of my hair. He brings it to his lips. “You look sexy as fuck, Rey. I like your hair like this.” He rubs the silky, dark strand against his lips.
“Nice key change Hay. But you should take those bedroom eyes elsewhere.”
He hunches over and nuzzles his mouth into my neck, licking and kissing a trail up to my ear. “Now why would I want to do that?” he whispers, his voice husky.
Goose pimples flare out on my neck beneath his warm breath. I ball up a chunk of his T-shirt into my fist for some semblance of control. His hands move to grip tightly around my waist and I could scream at my body as it arches into his embrace.
This is exactly what Hayden does to me. He makes me lose all sense of thought and purpose. It’s part of the draw. He’s a freaking mess just like me and I ache for the pleasure I know he can grant me
“We say a lot of words,” he mumbles against my neck. “Let’s do less saying. And more fucking.”
His words have an instant shock to all my erogenous zones. Suddenly, he shifts his head and swipes his lips against mine in a painful, biting kiss. The taste of red wine passes back and forth between our lips and tongues and my eyes roll to the back of my head as I let his assault intoxicate me.
His tall frame is at an awkward angle, so he slides his hands down my butt and lifts me up. I wrap my legs around his waist and he slams me back against the fridge. The cozy press of his hard on against my center instantly has my groin thrusting into his.
“God I fucking love your legs,” Hayden growls and nips my collar bone with his teeth as he carries me over to my rumpled mattress on the floor in my living room.
This is what Hayden and I do best. We fuck to forget. We’re a mess of dysfunctional, codependent, sex-starved garbage together. And it is hot as hell.
